Lewis County is the long pull south on I-5 toward the Columbia, and the freeway handles nearly the whole drive. We head down past the JBLM corridor and Nisqually, hit Centralia at the outlet-mall exits, cross over to the Chehalis county seat, then pick up the side roads to Napavine or down to little Winlock near the southern county line. This is farm and small-town country, a world apart from the Tacoma sprawl, with long gravel drives, old farmhouses, and pole barns packed with gear, so even a routine move burns real miles getting there. Cole maps the run so the crew still has plenty in the tank for the carry once we arrive.
A lot of this work is families chasing cheaper land, retirees settling onto an acre or two, and remote workers who left the city for somewhere quiet off the Chehalis River, with garages turned into shops and barns stacked with tools. The clear-out-and-haul side of the business traces right back to Earl in 1971, when half the job was emptying somebody’s garage or barn, and Cole keeps running it that way. Every mover is W-2 and on our payroll, the name on the trucks rides the whole way down, and a Chehalis sale or a Centralia move-in that drifts means the load sits in our own climate-controlled Tacoma storage. No leg of it ever gets subcontracted out.
South on I-5 to the Farm Towns
Homes out here sprawl, which plays right to what our crew does best: a gun safe out of a Napavine shop, a barn’s worth of tools out of a Winlock pole building, the heavy farmhouse pieces filling a Centralia living room, plus whatever junk-out hauling has to happen before a sale closes. The old brick downtowns of Centralia and Chehalis make for tight street loading, so we bring a truck that fits and put $1M of cargo coverage behind the load. The figures don’t move around: $140/hr for two movers, $185/hr for three, $240/hr for four, or one flat written total after we survey it, the long southbound haul already counted.
